3 Tips For Storing Aluminum Sheets

Posted on

If you rely on aluminum sheets for your company's manufacturing needs, then you probably store a lot of these sheets in your factory at any given time. If you aren't careful, however, your aluminum sheets could be damaged before you ever get a chance to use them.

This does not mean that you have to cut down on the metal sheets that you keep stored in your factory, however. Instead, you should simply follow these tips for storing your aluminum sheets in the best way possible. Then, you can keep them in good shape until they are needed.

1. Keep Them in a Climate-Controlled Area

First of all, you should focus on climate control. Very thin sheet metal can actually become more pliable in overly hot conditions. Also, humidity can cause staining. Many warehouses and factory work floors can get very hot, but if at all possible, you should keep temperatures as controlled as possible.

2. Store it on a Rack

Sheet metal can become damaged if it's stacked on the floor. It could be accidentally walked on or driven over with a forklift or other type of equipment, for example. After being stuck together for long periods of time, separate sheets can stick to one another and can be difficult to separate. A much better option is to store aluminum sheets on a vertical rack that has separate openings for each sheet of metal. Along with keeping your sheet metal safe, it's also a great way to make it easier to grab the sheet metal as needed.

3. Keep it Covered

In your average factory setting, sheet metal can get dusty. Plus, it can get wet if there is any moisture present, which can cause staining and can also cause sheets to stick together. This is why it is best to keep it covered until it is needed. When you purchase your sheet metal, leave any factory wrapping on it until it is needed for production. If it does not come with any wrapping, consider using a dust cloth or plastic sheeting to keep it covered up. This will help prevent damage from moisture and will also help keep your metal sheets clean and ready for use.

Storing sheet metal in your factory is very handy if you use it on a daily basis. If you want to prevent it from being damaged, follow these three helpful tips. Contact a company like Garelick Steel for more information.
